Recreational shrimp fishing closing in marine areas 7 and 8

Action: Recreational shrimp fishing is closed effective immediately in Marine Area 8, will close Friday evening in the north/central portion of Marine Area 7, and will close Saturday evening in the southern portion of Marine Area 7 (the Iceberg Point and Salmon Bank areas).

Effective dates:

* Marine Area 8: Immediately.
* North/central portion of Marine Area 7: 9 p.m. Friday, May 15, 2009.
* Southern portion of Marine Area 7: 9 p.m. Saturday, May 16, 2009.

Species affected: All shrimp.

Location: The north/central portion of Marine Area 7, which includes all waters north of a line from the Initiative 77 marker on Fidalgo Island to Point Colville on Lopez Island, then north of a line from Davis Point on Lopez Island to Cattle Point on San Juan Island, then north of a line due west from Lime Kiln Point light on San Juan Island to the international boundary, will close Friday evening. The southern portion of Marine Area 7 (Iceberg Point and Salmon Bank areas), which is all waters of Marine Area 7 south of the above boundary, will remain open until Saturday evening, after that all waters of Marine Area 7 will remain closed until the non-spot shrimp season opens in June.

Reason for action: The recreational spot shrimp quotas in these areas will be reached.

Other information: Marine Area 12 (Hood Canal) will remain open through at least Saturday, May 16. Marine Areas 9, 10 and 11 are closed.
